Sponging Meets Stampscapes

Hello Crafters!

The last few days have been challenging creatively.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I recently started playing with sponging, masking and brayering and I am still having fun with that.  Recently I was introduced to Stampscapes, which is a line of scenic stamps designed by Kevin Nakagawa, purposely for creating scenes and that has taken my sponging to another level.

When I saw the beauty of the cards made with these stamps I knew I had to try it for myself, and yes I fell into this sponging alternative rather easily although performing the technique isn't easy at all. It does take time but the results are fabulous.  Currently I am trying to follow his online tutorials on what inks to use, how to apply the inks, depth, value and overall design.  Its also pretty cool how one stamp can generate an array of unique scenes.

Below you can see my attempt at creating scenes that are inspiring and dramatic at the same time.  Then at the end of this post I will add a link to a gallery where you can view some of Kevin's work. You can also search Stampscapes on Pinterest for even more.

I hope to show you how one or two stamps can be used to create multiple scenes.  For now I want to share what I am calling my Rustic Cabin Series...so let's get going.

My first scene has a wooden cabin in the background that sits on a lake and is surrounded by trees and rocks.  After stamping the original stamp I added extra trees around the cabin and then added the rocks to create a foreground. Only three stamps (water, cabin, and rocks) were used to create this scene.

I changed the scene a bit by placing the rocks in the background to represent a rocky mountain.  Additionally I added trees using the cabin stamp and if you look closely they seem to be sitting a bit in the back and to the right of the cabin.  Oh BTW to create the mountain I actually stamped twice and over layed the second stamp.

Lastly I decided to change the color completely and remove the rocks. Doing this created a scene that I thought was warming and relaxing, perfect as a "get well" card.  I added a sunset using a little masking.  In the foreground I created a frame around the greeting using a reef stamp multiple times.

All three cards were sponged using both pigment and dye inks. I tried stamping the scene first and then sponging on two of them and then decided to sponge first and then create the scene just to see which technique worked best for me.  As an extra touch I continued to carry the scene on to the inside of the cards.

Hope you guys enjoyed looking at my sponging techniques and how Stampscapes and sponging, brayering and masking just go together so well.
